CLIMATE HERO

You hear the call. You are determined to guide the people toward the truth. Careful, there is no room for blunders. Your worst enemies are your own mistakes. Your personal flaws will be magnified, your tactical failures will not be forgiven. To save the Earth takes utmost dedication, you must truly play the game.

Climate Hero is a casual and fast-paced card game where you guide the career of a dedicated climate activist. The focus of the game is making a change by carefully dealing with public relations.

Clime Hero was made for Climate Jam 2024.

Requirements & Known Technical Issues

The game requires minimal resolution of 1280x800px and an updated web browser. Maybe it works in IE/Microsoft Edge but these are not officially supported.

If you are using MacOS and dock bar is covering up large portion of the screen you may need to find a way to play in full screen, and reload the page (Green button in the top left corner of the Safari window?  Control key + command key + F). Hopefully, this issue will be resolved before deadline.

Instructions

The game is easy to understand in general, and can be played without complete knowledge of the mechanics. But, if you are curious check out the following explanations.

The goal of the game is accumulate enough Impact before the final turn, where both depend on the selected difficulty level.

Game's loop: At start of each turn you have to draw one card (or three cards at start of the game). Cards can be drawn from one of four decks at the top, each representing a different scope: local (the only one available at the start), regional, national, and world. If an event card is drawn, an immediate action might be required. Then, you have to play one card from the hand, or draw 3 if your hand is empty, after which the game loops back to draw phase.

Scopes are decks, each with unique cards, with the exception of "Live and Forget" that is present in all decks. The final, World deck contains mostly special cards and events that make you reap the fruits of previous choices or plan further actions.

Cards come in three varieties: "Activity" hand cards are most common, their purpose is to be deployed into a scope's slot (appropriate scope's slots will be flashing when an activity card is selected), and they represent some activity that your character is undertaking, providing constant alteration of stats. "Special" hand cards do what their description says when played. "Event" cards are active immediately when drawn and take some effect, often forcing you to make further choices.

Activity cards have following stats that have effect when the card is deployed into a slot: Impact, Attention, and Price. Other cards may only have Price if they are deployable. Impact is added to the total impact gained during each turn, the more the better. Attention is a constant (not added each turn) that adds to the Attention bar of the scope where it is deployed. Price is a constant (not added each turn) and may be one of four types: Alienation, Comfort, Ego, and Hypocrisy. Each of these is a negative publicity, representing things you are accused of, the negative publicity. Cards that do not bring some amount of negative publicity (due to the public's congition bias) are rare, and few very rare cards have a negative number there, meaning they reduce the negative publicity.

To unlock the next scope, you need to popularize one card from the previous scope and move it into the next one, which can be done either by filling up the Attention bar of the previous scope or by a special action card. When a card is popularized into the next scope its Impact and Attention stats go up by formula: (original stat * number of promotions). Attention bars can be filled up again even after the next scope is unlocked, but the capacity of the bar usually goes up, depending on scope.

I think this is a cool concept! Once all the cards fill up though it's kind of hard to keep going.
